West Coast of Isle of Portland
The walk starts, after looking at Chesil Beach, at the top car park on the Isle of Portland and follows the SW coastal path around the west of the Island looking at the rock types and quarries. We will also look at the history of the defence of the Island from the 16th century to WW2 as we walk past gun emplacments and warning stations. Portland Bill lighthouse is one of many showing the importance of the Island and Weymouth Harbour throughout Naval history. The quarrying is more evident on the east side of the Island and the walk includes Ope Cove to look at Rufus Castle and finishing in the Museum if there is time.
